Aliya Resort, Sigiriya

‘Aliya’ meaning elephant in Sinhalese, is aptly named for an eco-friendly resort in the middle of lush wilderness where wild elephants have roamed for millennia. Located amid indigenous trees, paddy fields and wild foliage with breath-taking views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Aliya Resort & Spa was conceived by perfectly blending a minimalist aesthetic with modern luxuries.  The hotel offers a range of accommodation options from deluxe rooms, to suites and wooden chalets spread out across the property. All rooms feature a host of modern amenities and either open out to garden views or views of Sigiriya Rock. When it comes to dining, guests are spoilt for choice: the Alaka and Makara restaurants serves international cuisine while Nagula serves authentic Sri Lankan restaurant. An infinity pool and spa offer relaxation in the wild. Adjoining the main restaurant is the Paddy Museum which is definitely worth a visit as it displays traditional harvesting methods, which continue in local villages to this day.
