‘Aliya’ meaning elephant in Sinhalese, is aptly named for an eco-friendly resort in the middle of lush wilderness where wild elephants have roamed for millennia. Located amid indigenous trees, paddy fields and wild foliage with breath-taking views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Aliya Resort & Spa was conceived by perfectly blending a minimalist aesthetic with modern luxuries. All rooms feature a host of modern amenities and either open out to garden views or views of Sigiriya Rock. When it comes to dining, guests are spoilt for choice: the Alaka and Makara restaurants serves international cuisine while Nagula serves authentic Sri Lankan restaurant. Adjoining the main restaurant is the Paddy Museum which is definitely worth a visit as it displays traditional harvesting methods, which continue in local villages to this day.
