Wildlife and nature lovers will not go wanting in Sri Lanka. The island has 22 national parks teeming with wild Asiatic elephants, leopards, sloth bear, spotted deer, jackals, crocodiles and so much more. It is especially an amazing destination for bird watching with over 400 species of migratory and resident birds on the island at any given time, one of the best for birding is at Bundala, Horton Plains, Sinharaja and Kithulgala and Kumana. Diving off the east coast presents an ocean filled with coral and amazing marine life, shipwrecks and other underwater marvels. The island is also home to rainforests and botanical gardens, endless hills covered in tea gardens, paddy fields, rivers and mountains that offer a diverse ecosystem. Organisations such as the Millennium Elephant Foundation, the Uda Walawe Elephant Transit Home and the Primate Research Centre at Polonnaruwa offer ethical and sustainable animal-based interactions.
