Polonnaruwa's Primates

An early morning visit to the Smithsonian Primate Research Centre which has been working with and assisting in protecting the primate species of the region. Located at Polonnaruwa, you will get to meet some of its curious primates including torque macaques, grey langurs and if you cast your gaze upwards, higher-dwelling purple-faced leaf eaters and their devoted researchers.Their numbers have not always been so prolific and like many other countries, reduction of habitat meant monkey numbers were in decline. Luckily, in stepped field researchers to discover ways of protecting these different species. They will show you around and help you to observe the social interactions and behaviours of local troops as you stroll around a small part of this area whilst also learning about the challenges of monkey conservation.
